Minocqua

The Island City.

A downtown on an island, ringed by Lake Minocqua, and a summer tradition for generations of families.

Fact 01

Why the Island City

Downtown sits on an island in Lake Minocqua, joined to the mainland only by a bridge, a trestle and a narrow strip of land.

Fact 02

Rails to trails

The railroad reached Minocqua in the late 1880s to haul out timber. Its old trestles onto the island still stand as part of the Bearskin State Trail.

Fact 03

A resort town

When the logging ended, trains brought anglers and families instead. By the 1920s dozens of resorts had opened around the lakes.
